Lava’s founder and creative director, Hans Wolbers, is in Moscow for a lecture when he meets Alexandra Sankova. She tells him about her dream to establish the first design Museum in Russia. This meeting is more or less a starting point for the collaboration. Why Alexandra asks a Dutch designer to help her
realise a Russian design museum? She wants a museum with an international vibe.

Thanks to the client’s feedback we get inspired by a typical Russian crystal pattern. This has multiple advantages: Familiarity: crystal objects with this particular
pattern can be found in most Russian homes. Abstraction: the pattern offers flexibility and openness, Design: the concept is derived from an
actual product of Russian design.

The icons for the logo are generated on a hard-angled grid that can render dozens of interesting shapes, resulting in a flexible logo with many variations and possibilities but always with a very coherent and distinct DNA for all of them. Whether using one shape or twenty, the visual identity of the Moscow Design Museum is highly recognizable no matter where you apply it.

In this project for the Beijing Design Week we took the term Mobile Design Agency quite literally and showed that we can truly work anywhere with anyone who is open to new ideas. Sitting amidst the lively crowds of the Dashilan Hutong villagers, our laptops in hand, we created logos for local businesses. On the spot and for free. The experience was both a methodical approach to understanding the Chinese market and an exciting journey driven by design.

To start our Mobile Design Agency we bought a second-hand sanlunche, a local three wheeled vehicle. Armed with bilingual briefing forms, laptops and extension cords we drove into the streets of Dashilan. Looking for people who could use a logo for their small shops. A straightforward and uncomplicated briefing form aided in obtaining a clear understanding of the client’s wishes.

The bi-annual Summit focusses on global security of nuclear material. The
Netherlands hosted the 3rd Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.

Lava came up with a triangular system representing the nuclear symbol (3 triangles), the security symbol (1 big triangle) and the summit (the top triangle). Together these triangles
form the basic structure of an outspoken visual language in a usually visual conservative political arena.

More than 50 world leaders, 3,000 journalists and 5,000 delegates were at the World Forum during these two days. Clear signing was therefore a very important part of the job.

The 13th edition of the Istanbul Biennial opened with the title: ‘Anne, ben barbar mıyım?’* (Mom, am I barbarian?). The focal point of this Biennial was the notion of the public domain as a political forum. It questioned what is considered barbarian or civilized in the public domain.

The design reflects the politically and socially engaged concept with a strongly articulated visual language. Resembling borders of countries and neighbourhoods, the design is created by forces of conflict and consensus of the public and public space, freely translated into typography. Together they produce a language of force, pressure and movement.
